BMW, or Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, is a German manufacturer of luxury automobiles and motorcycles. It entered the U.S. market in the 1950s and began manufacturing automobiles in the U.S. in the 1990s. It targets a consumer in search of a precision engineering in a powerful, high-quality vehicle. However, consumers are often disappointed. In a 2020 customer satisfaction survey, BMW plummeted to a record low for the brand. This is not surprising given that reliability is known to vary widely across the brand. BMW ranked just 17th out of 30 brands for reliability in a 2020 Consumer Reports survey and below average for quality in a contemporaneous study by J.D. Power.
