Honda Motor Co., Ltd (Honda) is a Japanese multinational corporation that manufactures automobiles, motorcycles, power equipment and aircraft. Founded in 1949 by Soichiro Honda, the company started out making motorcycles, and is currently the world’s largest motorcycle manufacturer. In 1986, Honda became the first Japanese automobile manufacturer to enter the luxury brand market with the introduction of the Acura. Today, Honda is the eighth largest car maker in the work. Takata Airbag Class Action Settlement

In September 2017, Honda reached an agreement in a $605 million class action settlement covering losses of about 16.5 million Honda and Acura owners with defective Takata airbags. The widely reported defect was due to an degrading accelerant that caused the airbags to explode upon deployment, sending potentially deadly metal fragments into the passenger area.

Current and former Honda owners will be eligible for benefits, including:

  • Payments of up to $500 apiece.
  • Free rental car for use while awaiting repairs.
  • Reimbursement of reasonable expenses, including transportation, towing and lost wages or childcare costs, accumulated as a result of the recall.

It is important to note that this deal is solely between Honda and consumers and does not involve Takata directly. The settlement is one of a series related to the airbag scandal (Takata filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2017). Eligible vehicles include certain model year Honda Civics, Honda Accords, Accord Crosstour, Honda Pilot, Honda Odyssey, Honda Ridgeline, Honda Element, Honda Insight, Honda CR-Z, and Acuras.
