In October 2017, Kia announced a second recall of over 342,000 vehicles in the U.S because the first repairs may not have resolved a steering defect. The problem was attributed to a pinion plug that was not properly secured, causing the pinion gear to separate from the steering assembly, resulting in loss of steering function. Affected vehicles were certain model year 2014-2016 Kia Soul and Kia Soul EV.
