Beep Beep! What’s Wrong With My Jeep?

The Jeep Compass was released fifteen years ago. Although it has evolved since its first generation model, adding technology and security, it remains underwhelming and problematic in many regards.

Despite numerous recalls, investigations, and complaints, the compact crossover SUV has a notable presence in the United States, as the model consistently sells in the six figure range year after year. According to J.D. Power, Jeep Compass owners most enjoy “the exterior styling, interior design, driving dynamics, seats, and visibility and safety” of the vehicle. The Jeep Compass certainly has a presence in the market, and overall ranked tenth out of fifteen in J.D Power 2019 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) study of small SUVs.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports numerous recalls, investigations and complaints about the Compass, involving a broad range of issues, from the dashboard light to steering to vehicles that suddenly turn off while driving without any warning.

Recent reports from Compass owners contain a litany of complaints about many aspects of the vehicle. For starters, Compass owners report that there has been an unusual noise accompanied by lurching from the rear when accelerating following a stop. Other Compass owners have described issues with the electrical system failing, as well as issues with the electronic stability control.

A number of Compass owners have complained about the vehicle’s engine. Owners state that their Compass will stall out when on the road or not start at all. Beyond engine issues, Compass owners have also raised issues with the transmission, and the body of the vehicle, reporting that water leaks through the doors, windows, vents, and roof. Other Compass owners report vibrations and noise in their vehicles when they are operating at high speeds or are braking. Still other owners state that their dashboard warning lights will not turn off.

The Jeep Compass has also seen recalls in recent years. In 2020, Chrysler had recalled certain Jeep Compass vehicles due to a potential issue with the windshield wipers. According to the recall, affected vehicles were at risk of one of both windshield wiper arms loosening. Because of this issue, the wipers could potentially fail to properly work and could cause issues with visibility in inclement weather. To fix this issue, the recall allowed Compass owners to take their vehicle to the dealership in order to have their wiper nuts tightened.

In another recall, certain Jeep Compass owners were notified about a potential issue involving the rear brake caliper pistons. According to the recall, the affected vehicles may have an issue with the rear brake caliper pistons due to insufficient coating. This issue could potentially cause gas pockets to form and, as a result, possibly cause a reduction in brake performance. Affected Jeep Compass owners had the opportunity to take their vehicle to the dealer, where they would then bleed the vehicle’s brake system.
